2025 | THE BLACK SPIDER
A theater piece by Simon Burkhalter, free after Gotthelf
Summer 2025: It’s a christening in the Emmental. People eat, drink and make merry until someone in the company notices a bud on a tree. What follows is pure horror: many hundreds of years ago, a foreign knight oppressed the valley’s peasants so inhumanely that the Devil himself offered them a deal: the 100 beech trees demanded in the squire’s courtyard in exchange for an unbaptised child. Only Christine dares to make the pact. Soon, a spider grows on her cheek where the devil kissed her; it grows larger the longer they refuse to pay the price, eventually breaks free, multiplies a thousandfold, and brings death and destruction upon man and beast.
