Hansjoggeli, a wealthy, unmarried farmer from ‘Nidlebode’, is gradually growing older and weaker. His numerous relatives keep a close eye on him and shower their coveted cousin—the heir apparent—with compliments, gifts and well-meaning advice. Occasionally, they poke fun at their relatives, particularly the two godchildren, Bäbeli and Bänz, who, as maid and farmhand, loyally and diligently assist the Nidlebode farmer. The inevitable happens and Hansjoggeli dies, but the reading of the will – which is full of surprises – will reveal who ultimately stands to inherit from this coveted cousin.
